Introducing ‘Slayed by Voices’
A twice-weekly newsletter highlighting one special song each day
…………………………………………Not bad, huh? I don’t have a logo or anything yet, so I did this on Excel……………………………………………
Hi everyone -
Some of you know me from my 19 years of writing about the Dodgers, primarily at Dodger Thoughts. Some of you know me from my two published books on the franchise, 100 Things Dodgers Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die and Brothers in Arms: Koufax, Kershaw, and the Extraordinary Dodgers Pitching Tradition. Some of you know me from Twitter. If a guy can dream, some of you will know me someday from my first novel. And some of you, you know, know me.
But I’d say none of you know me as a music writer, because … I have never been a music writer.
And I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m starting now, but here’s the thing. I am someone who is deeply affected by music. That doesn’t make me unique, but it has long been a desire of mine to try to celebrate at least a fraction of the songs that have impacted me in a variety of ways — from the ones that lift my spirits to those that reach deeply into my soul, seeming to understand me more than I understand myself. And then there are the songs that are just powerful and brilliant.
So that brings us to Slayed by Voices, a free limited series dedicated to songs I adore. Originally, I was going to call this Song of the Day and do a new post every day. But that proved to be way, way too ambitious. I mean, was I completely out of my mind? Yes, yes I was.
Then, as I was mulling over which songs I was going to write about, there was one that I realized I wanted to do for no other reason than the singer’s voice just slayed me. And there you go.
Also, if you search for “Slayed by Voices” on Google, there’s only one result. Seriously, literally, only one. How about that? Here it is:
Adele can get slayed by voices that are special like hers and in addition have more range, power and all that.
I particularly like the “all that” at the end of that sentence.
Anyway, the plan for Slayed by Voices, beginning November 1, is to run new posts Mondays and Thursdays for 13 weeks. Using the Base-10 system, I calculate that to be 26 posts in all. My hope is that you find something meaningful or fun in all of them, or if you don’t, at least I don’t discourage you from reading the next post. But ultimately, this is just something I wanted to do, even if were only for myself. Anyway, we’ll see how it goes.
Unlike Dodger Thoughts, you have the option to receive every Slayed by Voices post directly in your in-box (in addition to being able to visit the website). All you have to do is subscribe, and there’s no cost whatsoever. (In fact, maybe I should pay you all to read it.) But for your purposes, it’s free. I could even say, IT’S FREE.
So give it a go, share with your friends, let me know you what you think of it (positive or negative — suggestions welcome!). Converse with other readers in the comments. In the words of Kool and the Gang, “Celebrate good times, come on!”
