The sadly endless relevance of Patty Griffin's 'Tony'
A visceral 1998 song of intolerance, loneliness, depression and suicide still spits fire today
I don’t need to explain the harsh climate facing the LGBTQIA+ community today. It’s everywhere.
One thing that does bear mentioning: Of those concerned about the effect the LGBTQIA+ community has on their children, none seem concerned about the reverse.
None seem worried about the danger their persecution of the community brings to the vulnerable.
None seem to connect this with other forms of persecution plaguing American society for 400 years and counting.
None seem to realize that aggressively attempting to wipe out entire identities is unforgivable, especially when the stakes are life and death. And they are.
Today’s Slayed by Voices post is about the Patty Griffin song, “Tony.”
I’m warning you, it’s a hard listen.
