The title of the book is A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them.

In that title, author Timothy Egan’s use of the word “plot” understates how far along the United States of the 1920s was down the path toward White supremacy.

But the final part of the subtitle is no exaggeration. A woman, living a perfectly nondescript life in Indiana in 1925, is murdered, but in succumbing quite possibly saves the country.
